Milestones of CyberBee.msu.edu

Sept. 11, 1997 CyberBee.Net was registered using my own funds, with Internic (Network Solutioins). Right now one can register a domain name for $15 or less per year, at that time it was $150 per year!
Dec. 12, 1997

Cyberbee.net became operational (maybe earlier, but this date was the earlist date stamp I found on my machines now). This was what I said about cyberbee.net in 1997:

CyberBee.Net is the only privately owned (and not-for-profit) domain name dedicated entirely to honey bees. Other domain names (see below) related to bees usually belong to an organization. There are many other web pages on honey bees, but they are usually affiliated under another domain name and difficult to remember. I named this site "CyberBee.Net" for two reasons. First, the honey bee and computer are the two things I love. Second, all the information on this site about bees would not be available without computers networked together.
CyberBee.net is privately funded (partially supported by Cyber First International, Inc*). This site is devoted to educating the public about beekeeping, honey bee biology, honey bee research around the country and the world. I will strive to make this site one of the best resources you can find on the Internet about bees and beekeeping.

*note: www.cyberfirst.net has ceased operation since 1999..

Nov. 1, 1998 I accepted a position at the Michigan State University as an assistant professor, in the department of Entomology. Right now, the physical machine hosting www.cyberbee.net is sitting in my office, and therefore taking advantage of the high speed network available here. Although the machine is still mine (did not have time to switch to a MSU machine yet), part of my job is to perform extension and outreach, so I do spend some time during the day (although mostly nights and weekends, thanks for the internet connection from tcimet). I can no longer claim that cyberbee.net is privately funded (at least not totally).
July 30, 1999 Cyberbee.net was moved to my home due to instability of the network at my workplace. It had problems during summer when the router room becomes too hot. It seems the network provided by TCIMET.NET is a bit more stable (although at times it browns out for a few hours, during a storm or simply randomly).
June 2, 2000 CyberBee is featured in the "Hot Picks" list in the Netwatch section of the journal Science. Published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, this journal is the de facto leader among journals in publishing first-class scientific discoveries. Once a week, the Netwatch publishes what it considers to be the best sites on a particular subject.
Dec 29, 2001 BeePhotos was added, this immediately becomes highly popular.
Aug., 2002 I moved the machine back to my bee lab. Hopefully the network there will be more stable. During most of the 1999 to 2002, the domain was hosted in my basement.
May, 2003 Added more photoes to the main page on May 10. A searchable photo gallery (http://photo.bees.net) was started May 17. This immediately doubled the traffic to cyberbee. Server statistics for cyberbee.msu.edu became available May 26.
