although i did not find the bee my son and i were looking for, we enjoyed looking at the marvelous pictures. i had checked two other sites - they had monocolour drawings. we were trying to identify a bee we saw this morning, northern california area. it was carpenter in size, amber-coloured and no distinctive black markings.

Found these small bees in my English Ivy. It may be a small swarm, a few, less than 100. They are about half the size of a regular honey bee. Here are some pictures. It started to rain so I'll see if they are still there tomorrow.

You should check out a friend of mine, Garnett Puett. He is a fourth generation bee keeper/honey producer in Hawaii, but he also makes sculpture in collaberation with bees. He makes armatures and wax figures, then moves the queen around on these pieces, along with coatings of sugar water or honey, so the workers will build ellaborate combs upon them. Try googling his name and see some of the articles about him. You might find it interesting
