This is Ben Northern, my e-mail address is sdain@hotmail.com. My web page is at: www.justoffcenterstudios.com. I am a general public. Here are my comments:

This is more of a question than a comment; Just today (5/7/01) I was on the deck of my new home (Holley, NY-about 10 miles south of Lake Ontario, 11 am, sunny, 68-70 degrees). While I was out there, I went to look at a tree and leaned up against a railing when I noticed just to the right about 8-10 inches away was what looked like the GIANT bee. I got a good look at it before I freaked out...It was definetly shaped like a bee, the back body area was colored a redish yellow. no stripes. I don't recall the wings, but I'm assumeing that they were semi-transparent considering that I saw the body pretty well. Large Black legs....Pretty sure I saw 4 on the side facing me.I also believe that the tips of the legs were a lighter color, almost yellow. The head was in proportiion, and had large black eyes. Didn't notice any antennea or mouth attributes. And did I mention the size? I swear on every dead relatives' grave that this thing was easily AT LEAT 5-6 inches from head to end of torso. And that torso was easily 1.5-2 inches thick. After a good 3 seconds of staring at it, primal fear replaced curiosity, and I jumped back. This action seemed to have stirred the 'giant bee', and it began to rise, slowley, at calmly flew down and into the woods behind my home. To be honest I can't remember what kind of a sound it made as it flew away. I know waht humming birds look like, and fly like. This was not one. THis was no bird.... Anyway, now that this makes this the 100th officail time that I've told this story today, hopefully you, or a reader can tell me what I saw. Thanks -Ben Northern

today, I stood outside and one lone bee, came to look for water or salt from me, no, I didn't swat at it, it tried to look inside of my ears, my nose, my eyes, I live in southern california, could this have been a "sign" we are in for a real hot scorching summer? or was the bee just interested and curious, because i also had on coconut butter and a flowered shirt? I tried giving it regular bottled water, not with any suger in it, I know now, not to do that, I learned that when I was nine, I am now thirty-five years older, not immune to bees, I have been stung several times as a child, and my immunity has been changed to bee stings, so I swell around the sight, because I swatted a bee about eleven years ago, thinking it was just a fly and my hand started to swell. anyway, this was to really ask why the bee was so attracted to me!

I've got a question. I found what appears to be a couple of large bumble bees gnawing (quite audibly) there way into a cedar deck railing. It is a dime sized hole and they were probably 4" in, before I discovered them. They were not very happy about my interference in their activities. Q - Is there such thing as "carpenter bees"? A friend told me a story about 'carpenter bees' a couple of years ago, and I had a great laugh at his expense. I would hate to think he was right.

In the US there is only one state I know of that has a registered dog who sniffs out a particular disease in honey bee boxes. Does anyone have any information on this?

Awesome web page, great job. I live in central Maine and I now have 36 hives that I am wintering and plan to rent for pollination. I want to build up my number of colonies to about 200. I want to migrate most of my bees for this purpose within New England, Carolinas, and Florida. I am open to propositions for contracts, as-well-as possibly purchasing your hives (state inspected at time of sale), if you may have any for sale in the springtime. Any inquiries please give me a BUZZ at 207-262-9007 or email me!!
