The BeeCam didn't work, there was no information about ordinary honeybees that I needed for a project and there were hardly any pictures! Your site needs desperately to be improved. I found no information whatsoever. I'm sorry but I do not recommend this site to people such as myself.

We are looking for information on Honey Judging and Class standards which we may use to develop the requirements for the Berrien County Youth Fair honey and beeswax ehibits. Information in electronic media (e-mail, disk [dos]) would greatly reduce typing and would be immensely appreciated. We will compile, review and send out for local comments, making any modifications necessary for local custom. This fair has never had a 'rule book'. We want to provide both the youthful participants and the judges consistent and fair guidelines.

I have had colleges, professional bee keepers try with no success to remove them. I am desparate!!! The honey has ruined the celings and i cannot undo the damage without them being gone. Please e-mail me if you can help in any way.

This is a very good idea and set up - a place to find many WWW Addresses for Honeybee beekeeping info. I am the President of a beekeeper's Assoc. and this appears to be a good source to obtain subjects for discussions at meetings - always looking for new topics. Research, Genetics and Bee Breeding are always interesting. In responce to some of the guest book entries - Being that this is principally about Honeybees, don't be dissapointed if Wasps & Hornets are not included here. Search for them on the Internet. They are an all together different species. I want to Thank-you, Zachary Huang, for your well done efforts and Accomplishments. Bob

I am secretary, treasurer of the Armstrong Indiana Beekeepers Assn. We have members in about 8 counties in western Pa. I am also a Master Beekeeper. Being totally new to the internet, it is gratifying to see so much information already here on my favorite subject. I publsh 4 or 5 newsletters each year and I understand what you mean about gathering and publishing timely information efficiently. Lots of success on your efforts with your book. In this area we a experiencing an amazing increase in the interest in beekeeping. The AIBA picked up 23 new members this year. Most of the increase was due to an outyard meeting we did last May where we made splits, requeened, and generally got down to the bottom board on several hives. We advertized the meeting in several newspapers and opened it to anyone who was interested.

Would like to get more information on apis capensis, think it is very interesting. Keep up the good work, This will help all the new beekeepers, with the lack of wild bees because of varroa we may increase the number of beekeepers.

Help me! I have just rented a house that has a bee hive either in the outside wall or attic. They have become a pest to myself and my family. They will enter the inside of the house through the light fixtures when they are turned on. I can see where they are entering the outside but do not know where the hive is. I have had them exterminated once but a week later they came back. Any suggestions on how I may get rid of them?

I have a problem similar to other guests and the problem is that I have bees in my house.I need to know how to get them out and keep them out. They appear to have invaded the space between my chimney and the upstair wall, and may have built a hive there. How can I find out if they have built a hive and what do I do about it? They retreat to the chimney area in late afternoon and explore the interior of my home during the day. There are many thousands of them. My home is in NW Florida (Panhandle area). Please advise me ASAP!

Very nice site, but, I am looking for information on how to get rid of honey bees. My neighbor (we live on 2.5 acre lots so its not real close) keeps honey bees and his bees come over to our pool and pond and flowers and are driving us crazy...is there any natural way to keep bees away? Don't want to kill them just keep them away from us....can anyone help???

Was as first very upset to discover small hive of rogue brownish bees. They did not respond to the poison my handyman poured into the box without my knowledge. They continue to thrive. they are not hostile and I have been able to go right up and peer in the box. I don't see any stingers on any of them. However, they h ave a nice cache of honey and wax at this point, 2 months after discovery. I do not want to hurt them. Where can I go to learn about nutureing them? Called bee persons here and they wanted $150 to come out to take them away. NOT an option. Thanks.

I am a former hobby beekeeper. I gave it up for lack of time. Also, I live in Southern California, and the business about the Africanized bees has made me dec ide not to go back into it. So I am going t to sell my bee stuff. Mainly, I ha ve a very nice stainless steel four frame honey extractor that I would like to f ind a good home for. It is probably worth a couple hundred dollars, but I will let it go for $75.00 plus shipping. I will crate and ship it and only charge wh at UPS charges. I will throw in some other stuff, like my smoker, and I even ha ve a set of white coveralls. Anyone interested?

Happy to find this site. Can anyone suggest the best source for pictures and text to support identification of bees? I have so many different kinds in my summer garden I want to identify them. I grow an anise-scented sage (basil?) that draws one kind of bee, essentially no butterflies, and draws these bees to the point that every flower has two or three all day long. Yet they don't bother anyone going by. (It's growing right at my kitchen door.)

although my grandfather raised bees, I don't have anything to do with them. However a question came up that I thought I had an answer to, but a friend disagrees with me. It is my understanding that drones get pushed out of the hive, in the fall and tend to get a little surley and will sting any passerby. My friend says this is not true, that the drones do not have stingers....can you settle this for us?

I am a parent looking for clarification/confirmation concerning "honey therapy" for treatment of allergies. I have 3 children (11, 8, 4) who suffer in varying degrees from allergies (hayfever, pollen, dust mites, etc) and have been told that if an allergy sufferer takes 2 tablespoons of honey (one in AM, one in PM; the honey must be from a local beekeeper) they can develop immunities to many of their allergies. Is this sometimes true? How can I find a local (none,& no associations are listed) beekeeper? Where can I get more info? I would rather try this than put my kids through a series of shots. We would like to have the rear of our property as a shaded "country garden" and would like to know how we can encourage bees onto our property. We understand that there is a mite problem with honey bees and their numbers are dropping, is there another type of bee that would pollenate flowers and trees and that would survive in our wet climate? I am from Western Australia. I have seen a blue striped bee in my back yard. Would love some info regarding blue bees. You could leave a message on the guest book. The bee was a little fatter than a normal honey bee and had very pale eyes and face (a dull grey colour), with bright blue stripes. Bye from Ongerup, South-Western Australia.

CyberBee answers: without seeing a picture, my best guess would be these are Orchid bees. They are usually metalic (blue or yellow), can be much bigger than honey bees (size of carpenter bees). The males collect oil from orchid flowersand use them for mate attraction. Mostly tropical.

I live in an old house in Milton, Florida. Honey bees decided they wanted to live in a wall of my house. I thought if I just let them alone that they would eventually move. It has been about five or maybe six years now and they are thriving. They gain access once in great while to the house and some of the poor creatures of course die. They don't bother me and I would just continue to let them live there in peace, but I need my roof fixed and no one will do it because of the bees. A local bee keeper wants $100. to get them out. I do not want to hurt them. I do not want to pay someone to take them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We live in Southeastern Arizona and have had two swarms of what we suspect are african bees settle in our rose garden in the last two weeks. A news report about killer bees in L.A. said that the tree where the bees were had to be destroyed or it would attract more bees. Do I have to destroy my rose bushes or take some sort of other steps in order to prevent attracting more swarms of bees?

I'm doing some research for an article I'm writing for kids. I've read that bees will sense that a rainstorm is coming and enter their hives and stay there until it is over. This happens before we see the physical signs of rain. There is a saying that bees wings never get wet. Is this true? Or just some folklore? I'd appreciate an answer so my info is accurate for my article. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some information on bees...I recently discovered bees living in my walls. I don't want to kill them, I would prefer to move them. I don't mind them living there, but the neighbors are complaining. Is there a way to safely move them? I would appreciate any information anybody can give me! I live just outside of San Francisco, so maybe there is someone in the area who could help me. I love listening to their peaceful hum in the wall, but I know they should be living somewhere more pleasant for them! Thank you! Salut!

A few months ago we noticed bees going into a crack in the concrete right by our front steps. They are very pretty (if bees can be called pretty) in color and fuzzy. My problem is, I would like to have them relocated and are new to the area. When we lived in Seattle there was no problem finding someone to come and remove bees but we moved to Rhode Island and I can't find any listings for someone that does this. I really don't want to have to have them destroyed, I just want to be able to walk in my front door and not be attacked. I can't work in the front garden bed or walk near the sidewalk without being dive bombed and yes, one got me the other day. Wow! Did that hurt!! Anyway, what I'm hoping is someone will be able to help me get in contact with someone real soon so these little buzzers can live somewhere else. I live in Portsmouth RI and I really need help. If you can help me please e-mail me.

(Phoenix, Arizona) I don't know the differences between one bee and another....What brings me to your site is honey production/manufacturing and food consumption. I am a VEGAN (strictest form of vegetarianism), and have heard many different versions as to how honey is produced. One theory is that the bees are gassed and their (bees) expulsion creates what is bottled for supermarket shelves. Is there truth to that theory? In addition to learning how bees make honey, is there a environmental and humane way to produce honey? Another question: What types of language/symbols should I look for when supermarket shopping? (On a personal note, I have a sore throat -no known allergies though- and would really like to take some honey to see if it helps) Thank you in advance of your replies.

Cyberbee.net replies:
there is absolutely no truth in the misinformation you received. Bees collect nectar from flowers, they then bring it to their hive, using a special stomach (separated from their food or other stomach contents, so they are 100% clean). Bees then give the nectar to receivers in a colony, the receivers move nectar to honey cells, where the nectar is dried down and the sugar sucrose converted into simple sugars (glucose and fructose), and honey is then made. Honey is made by the bees for their own use during winter. We take their surplus and leave enough for them to winter.

there is no killing of bees to make honey.

As to shopping for honey, eating local honey is good for your hayfever and support local beekeeping. Some honey are imported. Nearly all domestic honey are free from pesticides or other chemicals because there are standards and each state does spot checks for pesticide residue.

Good luck,

This is more of a question than a comment; Just today (5/7/01) I was on the deck of my new home (Holley, NY-about 10 miles south of Lake Ontario, 11 am, sunny, 68-70 degrees). While I was out there, I went to look at a tree and leaned up against a railing when I noticed just to the right about 8-10 inches away was what looked like the GIANT bee. I got a good look at it before I freaked out...It was definetly shaped like a bee, the back body area was colored a redish yellow. no stripes. I don't recall the wings, but I'm assumeing that they were semi-transparent considering that I saw the body pretty well. Large Black legs....Pretty sure I saw 4 on the side facing me.I also believe that the tips of the legs were a lighter color, almost yellow. The head was in proportiion, and had large black eyes. Didn't notice any antennea or mouth attributes. And did I mention the size? I swear on every dead relatives' grave that this thing was easily AT LEAT 5-6 inches from head to end of torso. And that torso was easily 1.5-2 inches thick. After a good 3 seconds of staring at it, primal fear replaced curiosity, and I jumped back. This action seemed to have stirred the 'giant bee', and it began to rise, slowley, at calmly flew down and into the woods behind my home. To be honest I can't remember what kind of a sound it made as it flew away. I know waht humming birds look like, and fly like. This was not one. THis was no bird.... Anyway, now that this makes this the 100th officail time that I've told this story today, hopefully you, or a reader can tell me what I saw. Thanks -Ben Northern

today, I stood outside and one lone bee, came to look for water or salt from me, no, I didn't swat at it, it tried to look inside of my ears, my nose, my eyes, I live in southern california, could this have been a "sign" we are in for a real hot scorching summer? or was the bee just interested and curious, because i also had on coconut butter and a flowered shirt? I tried giving it regular bottled water, not with any suger in it, I know now, not to do that, I learned that when I was nine, I am now thirty-five years older, not immune to bees, I have been stung several times as a child, and my immunity has been changed to bee stings, so I swell around the sight, because I swatted a bee about eleven years ago, thinking it was just a fly and my hand started to swell. anyway, this was to really ask why the bee was so attracted to me!

I've got a question. I found what appears to be a couple of large bumble bees gnawing (quite audibly) there way into a cedar deck railing. It is a dime sized hole and they were probably 4" in, before I discovered them. They were not very happy about my interference in their activities. Q - Is there such thing as "carpenter bees"? A friend told me a story about 'carpenter bees' a couple of years ago, and I had a great laugh at his expense. I would hate to think he was right.

I'm interested in usung essential oils instead of apstain strips and also to cut the tearly cost of treating bee's for the social charter called mites. I'm worried with so different weather changes as far as temperature that bee's will be breaking the cluster and wiil freeze like a lot colonies did last spring in this area.

Like several of the other notes I saw, we have been in the eaves of our home. I have tried unsuccessfully to get rid of them. The area is visiable and reachable from a 2nd story window. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make them leave? Killing them IS an option also.Thank you.

greetings from gremany, fellow apiologist! things are looking pretty gruesome here in germany, this year: 30-50% loss of hives. (varoa + god-awful weather)hope you guys back in the states have better luck! btw/fyi: all the "young-beekeepers", the green-horns, had a 100% survival rate. :) (http://www.bee-info.com/ is actually from a buddy of mine... but what-the-heck i contributed to that site.) yours truly, >>---->Dietrich

My father has 20+ years'experience in beekeeping(eastern bee).He has invented some kinds of frame and beehive for the comb honey producing and enhance the honey productions by less manpower. If anyone is interested please contact me. It is suitable for the western bees too although it has not been used on the western bee yet.
